USS New Jersey (BB-62), the second Iowa-class battleship, was completed in May 1943 and decommissioned in 1948 following World War II. She was reactivated on 30 April 1968 at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard for service during the Vietnam War — the only battleship employed in that conflict. She provided naval gunfire support off the coast of Vietnam until December 1969, when she was again decommissioned. She was reactivated a third time in 1982 under the Reagan-era Navy buildup and served until 1991.
