The U.S. Navy’s World War II “battle cruisers” — more accurately designated as “large cruisers” — were the Alaska-class ships USS Alaska (CB-1) and USS Guam (CB-2), commissioned in 1944. At 808 feet and displacing 34,253 tons standard, they were the largest American cruiser-type vessels ever built, armed with twelve 12-inch guns and serving as fast carrier task force escorts in the Pacific. Published in All Hands, December 1945.
