With so many aircraft and ships operating across the vast Pacific, the Navy took practical steps to improve the survival odds for men forced to abandon ship or ditch at sea. This March 1943 issue of the Bureau of Naval Personnel Information Bulletin — later renamed All Hands — included detailed instructions for castaways on how to catch fish using improvised gear, which species to pursue, and how to supplement limited rations to stay alive.
